A fascinating look at the conceptions of madness in the 1960s. Despite the age of this book it is surprisingly accepting of differing viewpoints on mental health. The language may be out-dated and the theories out of fashion but the principles and desire to help are commendable. From page 111: “Guilt and a great loss of self-esteem are found in depression. In mania there seems to be an increase in self-esteem. The emptiness of the self in depression becomes replaced by an incredibly rich and intensified self in mania, a self ‘hungry for objects’, full of impulses, where guilt has vanished.”
