Another treasure from our Pelican pile. The Unattached is the report of an observation experiment conducted in the 1960’s by the National Association of Youth Clubs to discover why certain young people were not attached to any youth organisation. It is one of those endeavours which sounds like a fairly dry investigation but was actually intended to illuminate what was seen as a growing problem of youth disaffection. Social workers were sent into unfamiliar towns with concealed identities and the intention of helping the young people that they found. What emerges is a curious portrait of the relationship between these apparently troubled individuals and social workers who are pretending to be their friends. It is very much a product of its time.
