This month our book group book is The Member of the Wedding by Carson McCullers.
I mostly know McCullers from her short stories which are excellent and much more complicated than they seem at first (which is apparently also the case with this novel). Broadly this novel concerns a lonely twelve-year-old and her sister and her sister’s husband-to-be. It has been described as a coming-of-age novel that also investigates the darker parts of humanity’s desire to be exclusive.
And, as if that wasn’t enough, the beginning of the novel is featured on this Jarvis Cocker song:
If that doesn’t whet your appetite I don’t know what will!
We’ll be meeting at 7.30pm on 20th of March in the shop. Tea and coffee will be provided but you fancy something a little stronger, bring your own.
We don’t require any committment so if you don’t fancy this book or you’re not available this month you can always come next time.
Questions and suggestions for our next book are always welcome.
