Surely everyone in the country is familiar with the work of David Hockney (especially with the Tate using his famous painting to promote their A Bigger Splash exhibition). A Bigger Message: Conversations with David Hockney goes deeper than the usual descriptive biography. It features Martin Gayford’s recollections of a decade of talking to the artist. There are numerous insights here including Hockney’s excitement at watching raindrops fall into a puddle and the difficulties of drawing on an iphone. What really makes this book special, however, is the beautiful and numerous colour illustrations. Not only is the text accompanied by Hockney’s own work but also by works of art discussed in the text. Reading this book is a complete, immersive pleasure.
