There is something about proper matte paper dustjackets that is pleasing. I don’t know whether it is the fragility or the slight roughness or just some misplaced nostalgia that defines shiny book covers as a bit nineties. Whatever it is, I like old-style dustjackets and you can’t get more old-style that this second edition of LOTR. It’s not just the tactile quality of the covers but the designs themselves which have the key elements of the novel (the ring, the eye of Sauron etc.) but also a pleasingly abstract quality. Add to that the fact that this is the edition with Tolkein’s revisions and you have a must for any fans of the series.
