We are extremely excited to announce that we will be shortly selling a first, bound edition of the magazines containing The Hound of the Baskervilles by Arthur Conan Doyle. The magazines are bound in two volumes and will be going on sale on the 10th of November.
The Hound of the Baskervilles, like many other Sherlock Holmes stories, was originally serialised in The Strand Magazine which came out monthly. It was the common practice for monthly periodicals at this time to issue bound volumes of the previous six issues, printed from the original plates, before melting the plates down for recasting. It is two of these volumes that we at the Oxfam bookshop in Balham have for sale. They are bound with the original blue buckram with an illustration of the Strand on the front.
All stories in The Strand were lavishly illustrated and The Hound of the Baskervilles comes with illustrations by Sidney Paget. In no other edition are there as many illustrations. Examples are shown below.
The volumes will be on sale for £400 on Monday the 10th of November. If you have any questions please email firstname.lastname@example.org.
